If you’re a manager looking to make the most of your manager check-in meetings with your team, we’ve compiled 20 questions that you should consider asking before, during, and after the meeting. Not only will this help keep everyone on track and make the most of your time together, but if done well should help build empathy and understanding between you and your team.
Before the Manager Check-In
- What are you working on at the moment?
- What goals or objectives are you trying to achieve?
- What challenges or roadblocks are you facing?
- What support or resources do you need to succeed?
- What progress have you made since the last check-in?
- Is there anything specific you’d like to discuss during the check-in?
- Do you have any updates or reports that you’d like to share?
- Is there anything you’d like me to review or provide feedback on?
- Is there anything you’d like to add to the agenda for the check-in?
- Do you have any questions or concerns you’d like to raise during the check-in?
During the Manager Check-In
- What progress have you made since the last check-in?
- What challenges or roadblocks are you facing?
- If you were in my position, what would your priorities be?
- How can I help you succeed?
- What support or resources do you need to overcome any challenges you’re facing?
- What support or resources do you need to promote your work and achievements internally?
- What goals or objectives do you want to set for the next check-in?
- How are you feeling about your workload and priorities at the moment?
- Is there anything else you want to discuss or bring to my attention about culture, other employees or any personal matters?
After the Manager Check-In (but before the next one)
- How was that check-in for you? Anything you would like to see improved about the agenda, the process, the timing or the discussion next time we meet?
Asking these types of questions before, during and after your check-ins can help you stay connected with your team, understand their needs and concerns, and identify any issues that need to be addressed.
